Eco Education Movement

Project Overview

The Eco Education Movement built a climate curriculum that schools could actually run: twelve lessons, the materials to teach them, and training for the staff who would. Working with the Sustainability Center, the programme reached forty-one schools across the New York metropolitan area in its first year.

The design constraint was teacher time. Anything that needed more than one preparation period would not survive contact with a real timetable, so every lesson ships complete — slides, a practical activity, and an assessment that fits inside the period it belongs to.

Community Engagement

Families were part of the programme rather than an audience for it. Each term ended with an open evening where students presented their own measurements — of the school's energy use, its waste, its transport — to the people who would have to act on them at home.

Working with teachers

The curriculum was revised twice in the first year on the basis of classroom feedback, and both revisions cut material rather than adding it. Teachers consistently asked for fewer objectives and more time to reach them.

Results

Participating schools recorded an average 18 per cent reduction in measured waste over the school year, and nine of them established a permanent student sustainability council that continues to operate independently of the programme.

What comes next

The full curriculum is now published openly under a Creative Commons licence, and the training materials are being translated so that districts outside the original pilot can adopt it without our involvement.
