Renewable generation stopped being the hard part some years ago. Building the system around it — the grid, the storage, the market rules and the connection queue — is now where the real engineering happens.
From cheapest energy to cheapest system
A megawatt-hour of solar is cheap. A megawatt-hour of solar delivered at seven o'clock on a January evening is a different product with a different cost, and confusing the two is behind most of the bad arguments in this field.
The systems that are furthest along have stopped optimising for the first number and started optimising for the second: overbuilding generation, accepting some curtailment, and paying for flexibility rather than pretending it is free.
What is actually changing
- Batteries moving from frequency response into genuine energy arbitrage as costs fall
- Demand that can move — heat pumps, water heating, vehicle charging — being paid to move
- Offshore wind reaching scales where its output profile complements solar rather than duplicating it
- Interconnection between regions, which is the cheapest storage there is when the weather differs
The bottleneck nobody photographs
In most markets the queue to connect a finished project to the grid is now longer than the time it takes to build one. It is an administrative problem with an engineering cost, and solving it would do more for deployment this decade than any single technical advance on the horizon.
